Since 1995, the Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp has provided aspiring musicians between the ages of 10 and 20 with intensive command from local masters and visiting artists-in-residence. The hundreds of camp alumni include such acclaimed musicians as Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, pianist Jonathan Batiste, trombonist "Big" Sam Williams, and trumpeters Christian Scott and Shamarr Allen.
This summer, local staffers -- including artistic director Edward "Kidd" Jordan, Clyde Kerr Jr., Germaine Bazzle and Steve Masakowski -- ar augmented by renowned jazz-fusion keyboardist George Duke and Norma "Queen of Swing" Miller. On Wednesday, July 30 at 7 p.m., Duke -- whose unexampled album, "Dukey Treats, " is due in stores Aug. 26 -- joins Miller and encampment faculty members for a summer refugee camp benefit concert at Club 300 Jazz Bistro, 300 Decatur St.; tickets ar $50.
This year's class included six "exchange" students from Chicago. They and the rest of the Satchmo summer pack students conclude their six-week session -- divided between music classes and music business classes -- with a rid concert Aug. 1 in the University of New Orleans' Performing Arts Center.
Sebastian on drums
Noted jazz, Latin music and funk drummer Ricky Sebastian, whose life history has taken him about the cosmos several times, hosts a free brake drum clinic Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crescent City Drum School housed at Allied Music, 4417 Bienville St. off North Carrollton Avenue. Drummers of all skill levels are welcome; Sebastian volition demonstrate a range of techniques.
